DISTRICT HISTORIAN

E-mail: Gary Smith

Gary attended a barbershop show in Los Angeles in July 1967. Turns out it was the Past Champions Show (now called AIC Show) at the Society’s International Convention. Soon afterward he joined the Arcadia, CA Chapter. College and two Army overseas tours prevented him from active chapter participation until he moved to the DC area and transferred to the Alexandria Harmonizers in 1980. In his 20 years with the Harmonizers he served as President, Music VP, Chapter Historian (publishing the 50-year Chapter History), and numerous other positions. Musically the highlight was performing with the Harmonizers when they won Gold Medals in the ’86 and ’89 International Chorus contests.

He, and his wife Sarah Jane League, are Charter members of the Society’s President’s Council. They have been attending International Conventions since 1974—missing only two. They moved to Sarah Jane’s home town, Waynesville, NC, in November 2008 and Gary transferred to the Asheville Chapter in 2010.
